Olá queridos leitores!
Tudo bem?
Hope you enjoyed last week’s newsletter, where you learnt some very interesting hints for learning Portuguese really fast!
I will start today’s lesson by asking you…
Would you like to start improving your Portuguese reading skills?
There is nothing nicer and more local than sitting down outside a Portuguese café - na esplanada -, on a warm sunny morning with your café e um pastel de nata, whilst reading the local news!
Reading the newspapers is a great way to learn a new language without the problem of people speaking too quickly, and you can always use Google Translate when reading any of these online.
Here are some of the best Newspapers you can read in Portugal:
Correio da Manhã
It is a right-leaning daily newspaper. It has the highest circulation of any of the Portuguese dailies. It is most closely compared to The Sun and The Daily Mail in the U.K.
For anyone trying to read a Portuguese paper to learn the language, this is probably the most accessible choice.
Diário de Notícias
It is a centrist broadsheet daily. It’s a more high-brow read, along the lines of The Times in the UK. Its circulation is considerably smaller than Correio da Manhã but it is Portugal’s longest established paper, in operation since 1864.
Público
Público is arguably Portugal’s most left-leaning newspaper. Its closest equivalent in the UK would be The Guardian.
Expresso
It is published every Saturday, and is described as a centre-right publication, including plenty of opinion pieces, as well as coverage of cultural events alongside regular news.
Jornal de Notícias
It was founded in Porto in 1988 and generally represents the centre of the political spectrum. It is one of Portugal's highest-circulation and most widely read newspapers.
Most of the paper is dedicated to local news from the north of the country.
The Portugal News

The Portugal News is a weekly newspaper published in English, which covers local events as well as news particularly relevant to expats.
Main Portuguese TV News Channel
For those who feel that their Portuguese listening and understanding skills are slightly more advanced - you can start listening to the Portuguese News (although, beware that Portuguese journalists can speak rather fast sometimes!).
RTP (Rádio e Televisão de Portugal)
It is most closely compared to the B.B.C. channel in the U.K.
It operates four National channels (RTP1, RTP2, RTP3 and RTP Memória), Regional channels (RTP Madeira and RTP Açores), RTPi Iternacional (transmitted in In Macau, East Timor and Goa, Daman and Diu), RTP Africa (transmitted in Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé e Príncipe) and three National radio channels.
RTP1 is the oldest of RTP's channels. It features general programming, such as news, talk shows, current affairs, drama, national and international movies and TV series.
I hope this post has been useful!
